LED Plant Growth Lighting

LED Light and your Growth Chamber: What are the Advantages?

When it comes to using plant growth chambers, you need to ensure the set-up is ideal for the conditions you want to replicate. Many growth chambers, whether they are free-standing or walk-in, have key features like humidity, airflow and temperature control.

It is also important to consider the kind of lighting that you want installed in your growth chamber that’s going to give you the most accurate results. More and more plant scientists are utilising LED’s within their research programs, making it possible for them to meet the needs for specific light spectrums, but to also reduce the operational cost of their controlled growth environments.

How does LEDs reduce operational costs?

LEDs are able to direct all their light toward the plant without the reflectors required by other light sources, which generally emit light radially. While LEDs emit significantly more light per unit of input energy than fluorescent bulbs, they also produce less radiant heat, and can therefore be placed closer to plant material. With less waste heat, the cooling requirement for the controlled environment is diminished and the total energy used by an LED-equipped chamber is substantially reduced.

What are the research benefits?

When taking in to account their research objectives, scientists should consider factors such as:

Light Source – LEDs can be the primary source of light, and can supplement other sources with blue or red/far-red wave lengths.

Spectrum – narrow band or continuous wide spectrum LEDs can be used to deliver a unique light spectrum to plants.

Adjustability – LEDs are available in fixed and variable spectrums. The fixed can help create a blended spectrum within a controlled environment, while the variable LEDs allow for greater control of spectral composition by adjusting the intensity of individual LED colour channels within the fixture.

Intensity – LEDs retain their spectral profiles when dimmed, providing consistency in spectrum as researchers adjust intensities throughout the light cycle.

Environment – unlike fluorescent bulbs, LED output remains vastly more stable as chamber temperature decreases, providing consistency in spectrum for a wide range of temperatures.

Bioline Global’s LumiGrow Pro Series LED lighting systems are ideal for any growth research. Equipped with the SmartPAR Wireless Control Device, you can now control the light intensity, spectrum and photoperiod of your system from your phone, tablet or computer. And with a little set-up, you can automate your own schedule.

Some of the benefits include:

–      Achieving up to 70% energy savings compared to HID (High-Intensity Discharge) lamps.

–      Unleash ‘light as a growth variable’ with full spectrum control

–      Runs up to 70% cooler than HID lighting

–      Small hardware footprint to minimise plant canopy shadowing

–      RoH5 compliant (mercury and lead-free)

–      cUL/UL and CE certified

–      5-Year Warranty

–      While Light View Mode

–      Maintains light output longer than HID

The LumiGrow Pro Series is quite versatile and can be used in greenhouse horticulture, indoor cultivation and research greenhouses. Bioline Global currently stocks the LumiGrow Pro Series 650 and 325.
